I’ve been asked many times over the years…how do I transition from one job to another? There is no easy way to resign, but there is a professional way to move forward.
Professional courtesy is at least 2 weeks from the day you give your notice. If you are thinking longer than that you are doing a disservice to your new employer. If you start talking more than 3 weeks, you might not be ready to move on and you might re-think your move altogether. 2-3 weeks is fair for all.
If you are out of work or transitioning from the military to civilian life, there is nothing wrong with giving a 2 week start date to get your affairs in order. It’s not always that easy to start right away, so take some time, if finances allow, to get your home settled and get your mind ready to get back to the grind.
Are you headed back to the private sector from the military? I know from placing many ex service people, it’s not always a concrete date you are separated, so it can be a bit confusing to pin down a start date. Share as much as you know with your future employer and they should be more than willing, and happy, to wait for your services. I know it’s tough out there, but try to land a job no more than 4 weeks before you can actually start.
